How to repair a soapstone

Normally, the steps to repair a soapstone are as follows:
  • Fix any broken parts, cracks, chips, etc. with special epoxy, steatite powder & pigments of the same color as the stone; let it dry for 24 hours;
  • Heat the stone at 200o F to cure the glue;
  • Remove the excess glue and reshape piece to its original shape;
  • Sanding & wetsanding the whole piece to remove all scratches, bruises and  repaired areas on the sculptures;
  • Heat the stone again;
  • For the last step polish with linseed oil or bees wax  in order to give the sculpture its original « brand new » color or patina.

    * In case of bigger pieces, it may require to be reinforced with a rod.
